We decided to be adventurous on our way to the airport from Sedona and stop at Arcosanti in Mayer, AZ (kind of in the middle of the desert). We’d explore the grounds, take a tour, and snap so many pics because it’s like nowhere we’ve ever been!
The Cosanti Foundation operates Arcosanti as an urban laboratory to “counterpoint mass consumerism, urban sprawl, unchecked consumption of natural resources, and social isolation”. We were intrigued.
You can also stay the night…so we did!
The road to Arcosanti…here goes!
We weren’t completely sure what we were going to, but the pics looked great on IG so…
Cosanti Foundation‘s Arosanti follows the principles of arcology, a combination of architecture and ecology, searching for an alternative to urban sprawl. If you go for a tour prepare to be blown away by this place!
A photographer’s dream – Lora was in heaven!
You could be forgiven for feeling like you’ve arrived on another planet. The scene is crazy cool, like something out of Mad Max or Lost. Italian architect Paolo Soleri was the brainchild, and his design of Arcosanti is said to be the inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars planet Tatooine. He visited while he was dreaming up Star Wars!
Tour & explore
Make sure you take a guided tour with one of the residents and learn about this 50-year-old project and all of its fascinating history.
Buy an iconic Cosanti Windbell
Artist residents make the infamous bronze and ceramic windbells, bowls, and planters that are sold in the gift shop – generating funds to help keep Arcosanti (a non-profit) moving forward.
We love the ones we chose!
Stay the night!
Arcosanti offers the experience of getting up close with arcology – allowing guests to stay overnight in one of their guestrooms.
This calls for caftans!
We knew we wanted somewhere cool to shoot these caftans from Byrde and the b – and this spot nailed it.
Then dusk fell
Big sky indeed. We felt very close to our friend, the Universe!
Arcosanti is surrounded by 860+ acres of open land, making it the most amazing spot to enjoy some sky theatre. We were in awe.
The light!
Was everything.
The entire experience was for sure unforgettable!
