Last week, we stepped into the world of The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory in Torrington – and left completely in awe. Imagine peeking behind the curtain of one of Connecticut’s most respected dance institutions and watching a group of young ballet artists in the making, rehearsing under the masterful eye of Artistic Director Victoria Mazzarelli. Spoiler alert: We wanted to sign up for class immediately (keep reading for a chance to take a free adult class!).

How Torrington became a ballet hub
The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory has been shaping dancers and inspiring audiences since 1969. It began as a small, one-room studio founded by Sharon E. Dante. Over five decades later, it’s now an internationally recognized center for classical ballet and pre-professional dance training.
Their mission? To uplift and empower the next generation of dancers – while keeping the art form vibrant, accessible, and rooted in the local community. From a parent bringing their little one to a first class, to aspiring professionals chasing a stage career, The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory welcomes all who want to move!

An inspired space for inspired movement
Before we even got to the dancing, the space itself wowed us. We’ve always admired it perched above the Warner Theatre! Initially constructed in 1916, the building began as a neoclassical brick beauty for the Torrington Chamber of Commerce. It has since been thoughtfully revitalized by designer Tommy Thompson II.
High ceilings, stunning views, and an undeniable hum of focus and creativity filled the air. We could feel the dedication in the room.

In the studio with Victoria Mazzarelli
Then came our favorite part – watching rehearsal. Victoria Mazzarelli led the session with quiet authority and contagious passion. The dancers, a mix of grace and grit, responded to every note, correction, and cue with focus that was mesmerizing to watch.
These students are part of The Nutmeg’s Year-Round Program, which pairs elite-level ballet training with an onsite academic curriculum. It’s a holistic approach that ensures young dancers flourish technically, artistically, and personally.
And for those dreaming of a summer in pointe shoes – their 8-Week Summer Intensive Ballet Camp is legendary. Students from around the globe come to Torrington to train, perform, and grow in this supportive, yet rigorously professional environment.
