To “unlock” Lime Rock Park has been on our wishlist for a while. So, when they invited us to spend a day at their annual Sunday in the Park event, we were totally excited. Lime Rock is a historic road racing circuit in Lakeville which has been in continuous operation since 1957, making it one of the oldest tracks in North America. Almost all of the sports car racing greats have raced at Lime Rock.
Lime Rock – Sunday in the Park
I’d say we know a “fair” bit about cars, i.e., we know our Ferrari from our Lamborghini, and our Back to the Future car from our Ferris Bueller’s Day Off car, but other than that…honestly, we’re attracted to the color (Bev) or if we can imagine it being part of a royal wedding (Lora).
So, for our mission to cover the Sunday in the Park event, we quickly decided that we would follow quietly (maybe not so quietly) behind our husbands/assistants, who we brought along with us for this feature! Between them, they make an expert. When we saw them gravitate towards a car, eyebrows rising, smile appearing, chins being scratched, we would dive in, snap some pics (Lora) and take notes (Bev), “Oh that’s a Countach” and, “Check out that split window.”
Our next strategy for this post was to make our own judgment categories. We believe the pictures of these beautiful cars should simply be admired, but to interject a little Unlocking Connecticut style….may we present, “Car show coverage by Lora and Bev.” We are open to tv show offers.
Most resembles an animal
Hey, froggy (a Jaguar, btw)
Car we’d pick for our LC Sunday drive (we don’t like to draw attention…)
Cutest wheels
Evidently, a rubber mallet is all you need to change this tire.
Hottest red
Whoa, that grille!
Best booty
Best knobs
Hands-down fave knob….
Best font
Best grille AND font – this old girl has it all going on.
Nicest “eyes”
Best use of a floral pattern in a sports car
Gumby doppelgänger
“That’s so Gatsby”
Who should we bump into, but Wayne Carini from Chasing Classic Cars, and Murray Smith (Smith took over the organizing reins of the Lime Rock Historic Festival in 2009)!
Murray was kind enough to answer a couple of questions for us…
UC: Since 2009, you’ve been the chairperson for the historic festivals. What is it about the event that makes it so successful?
MS: It’s an event where it isn’t about a car’s worth….it’s about what a car is capable of and what it has done in its career. Real enthusiasts get this and flock to see them, on track or at Sunday in the Park.
UC: What’s your favorite part about the event?
MS: I like to race so I enjoy seeing the cars used in earnest. Some of our participants are really good drivers.
UC: Your favorite year/make/model of car ever. Go…
MS: 1956 Maserati 250F and 1964 Jaguar D Type.
And to round out the afternoon….we practiced giving out awards…
This one got the “Bev’s fave” award
And this one got the “Lora’s fave” award

Thank you for your assistance, husbands! 🙂
I very much enjoyed your fresh eyes on automotive styling. Automobiles need to attract our attention as hunter-gathers like animals in the wild.
Wonderful.
