We choose bed and breakfasts for uniqueness, cool history vibes, luxury touches, and appealing Instagram accounts; and not necessarily in that order. Fitch House B&B checked all our boxes and then some. Need a peaceful getaway? Read on.

Finally, our blog travels bring us to the “Quiet Corner” of Connecticut! We spent a relaxing night away at Fitch House B&B in Mansfield Center, a most beautiful home in a most beautiful part of the state. This B&B first caught our eye on where else but Instagram?!
Would you look at those columns!
Beautiful, right?!
The original structure was built in 1836 and has undergone many renovations to make the home larger and with more modern conveniences.
The library and music room as it would have been referred to in the 1800s is there to be enjoyed. Guests are encouraged to soak up some history and let their minds wander to days of olde.
A B&B with history
Fitch House was built by Edwin Sullivan Fitch in 1836 (built in 1 year) to woo his future bride Alice Adams. It was the first house he built of many in the Greek Revival style. Fitch continued to design and build many homes, churches, and mills in the area after its completion.
The Adams Room
One of four unique rooms available, we stayed in the Adams Room. With a retro ensuite bathroom, bathrobes, views of the sunroom and gardens, wifi, and chocolates, we had everything we needed.
Special touches
We do appreciate those special touches! Fitch House offers guests a selection of Lisa’s Chocolates, which if you love (you’ll love) can be purchased at the country store just a short walk from Fitch House. Well worth the visit.
We consumed these within 2.5 seconds of setting our bags down.
Extra R&R @ the B&B
Mia, the owner of the inn, offers yoga classes (both group and private) in the cathedral ceiling sunroom. It’s the perfect add-on for a rejuvenating getaway.
Mia and her husband Glenn Mitoma moved into the house with their family in June 2016. Fitch House was first opened as a B&B in the 1990s by the former owners: Katherine & Hamilton (Kay & Tony) Holt.
The Mitomas are proud to continue to love the home and share it with visitors from around the world when they travel to New England’s quiet corner.
Lucky for us we were visiting on a Thursday when Mia holds a yoga class for guests and the community.
The serene sunroom can be used to host group and private yoga practices and is otherwise available to guests for stretching or leisure. All in all, we felt more peaceful and limber than when arrived.
In addition, the gardens and grounds are tranquil even though located in the heart of Mansfield-Storrs. We took a stroll around when we arrived and said hi to the chickens who would be laying our eggs for breakfast.
The Holt-Kinney trail is accessible from the driveway, and Mansfield Hollow State Park is just a short walk or drive from “home” offering boating, fishing, picnicking, and hiking.
Evening activity
After yoga class in the sunroom, we decided to drive 5 minutes down the road for a bite to eat (truffle fries, what else?) and to bring back a bottle of red. We would get some blog work done in the spacious bedroom. And by blog work we mean watch Mystic Pizza on the laptop.
Breakfast is served…
…in the grand dining room at a long table with some other guests who we quickly started chatting with. We got some tips for local hikes (we’ll share). We sipped freshly pressed coffee out of china cups, enjoyed fruit that was as delicious as it was ‘grammable, and learned about FROG jam (fig, raspberry, orange, ginger).
Fitch House B&B works with and supports local farmers and businesses to provide local meals and treats. You can add on a massage and/or wine & chocolates for a romantic weekend getaway or contact Mia to plan a boutique event or retreat for your family or group.
Post-breakfast we donned our hiking attire and set out to go “Day Tripping in Mansfield.”
